Longtime television host and Greenwich resident Regis Philbin announced Tuesday he will retire from “Live With Regis and Kelly” at the end of the summer. Philbin, 79, made the announcement at the start of Tuesday’s broadcast.
“It’s been a long time. It’s been 28 years since I’ve been here,” he said. “There is a time that everything must come to an end for certain people on camera, especially certain old people.”
Co-host Kelly Ripa said, “I think I can only speak for America and all of us here when I say it has been a pleasure and a privilege and a dream come true. And I wish I could do something to change your mind.”
Philbin and former co-host Kathy Lee Gifford, also a Greenwich resident, began “Live With Regis and Kathy Lee” in 1988. Gifford left the show in 2000 and Ripa joined the show shortly thereafter.
On Aug. 4, 2004, Philbin set a Guinness World Record for “Most Hours on Camera” coming in with 15,188 hours on television.
